Wildfire Erupts Near Malibu, Mandatory Evacuations Ordered
A wildfire erupted on Monday, December 9, in Malibu Canyon, spreading rapidly due to strong winds and prompting mandatory evacuations. The fire, covering 100 acres, threatens nearby communities, including Pepperdine University and the Serra Retreat neighborhood.
Pepperdine University activated a shelter-in-place protocol, directing campus members to the Tyler Campus Center or Payson Library. “All community members on the Malibu campus are directed to shelter in place,” the university announced on Facebook. Fire crews continue battling the blaze as it spreads toward upscale neighborhoods.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department advises residents to monitor updates via alertla.org and social media handles @LACoFDPIO and @LHSLASD. Images shared online depict an orange sky and thick smoke fueled by Santa Ana winds.
Residents are urged to evacuate promptly. The Los Angeles Regional Fire Safe Council emphasized, “Don’t wait. GO!” Early evacuation is critical for personal safety and to aid firefighters in accessing affected areas.
