Researchers Stumbled Upon a Previously Unknown Organ in the Human Body

In 2020, researchers at the Netherlands Cancer Institute stumbled upon an unexpected finding while studying prostate cancer. During PET and CT scans using radioactive glucose to detect tumors, they observed unexplained glowing spots in patients’ heads. These were later identified as previously unknown salivary glands, named *tubarial glands*, situated behind the nose near the throat. The discovery was confirmed in all 100 patients studied, as well as through cadaver dissections, histology, and 3D imaging.

Dr. Wouter Vogel noted that the glands had remained undetected for centuries due to their hidden location and the need for advanced imaging technology. Previously, only microscopic mucous glands were thought to exist in that area. This breakthrough, the first new salivary gland discovery in 300 years, holds clinical importance as the glands help moisten the upper throat. Protecting them during radiotherapy could improve cancer patients’ quality of life post-treatment.
