New pope elected after white smoke seen from Sistine Chapel

Following Pope Francis’ death on April 21 due to a cerebral stroke, the Vatican entered a transitional period known as *sede vacante* (vacant seat). After nine days of mourning and rituals, the College of Cardinals elected a new pope through a papal conclave, with white smoke signaling the decision. While the new pope’s identity remains undisclosed, top contenders included Cardinals Pietro Parolin, Peter Erdö, and Luis Antonio Tagle. The voting process required a two-thirds majority, with four ballots held daily until a successor was chosen.

Pope Francis’ final will, released on April 22, requested a simple burial in Rome’s Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major. He asked for a modest ground tomb inscribed only with “Franciscus,” honoring St. Francis of Assisi, his namesake and inspiration. The late pope expressed gratitude for prayers and dedicated his suffering to world peace and unity. His testament, signed in 2022, emphasized humility and devotion to the Virgin Mary, reflecting his lifelong values.
