Ocasio-Cortez Disparages Charlie Kirk Ahead of Vote to Memorialize Him
During a House session preceding a vote to honor the late conservative figure Charlie Kirk, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez delivered a speech condemning his character. She asserted that supporting the resolution was comparable to endorsing historical segregation and bigotry.
Ocasio-Cortez accused Kirk of opposing the Civil Rights Act and making anti-Semitic remarks, claiming he accused Jews of controlling major institutions. She described his rhetoric as “ignorant” and aimed at disenfranchising Americans.
Kirk was recently assassinated on a Utah university campus. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, has been charged and could face the death penalty.
In response, both the House and Senate passed a resolution creating a “National Day of Remembrance” for Kirk. The measure designated his birthday, October 14, as a day of honor.
However, the resolution faced significant Democratic opposition. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi and 21 other Democrats walked out rather than vote on it. In total, 96 Democrats declined to support the measure.
In contrast, the Senate approved the resolution unanimously. Senator Rick Scott, who led the effort, praised Kirk as a “devout husband, father, and friend” dedicated to civic education and constructive debate.
House Speaker Mike Johnson stated that the resolution honors Kirk’s legacy and condemns the political violence that caused his death. The alleged attacker, Robinson, reportedly told his parents he acted because Kirk “spreads too much hate.”
