The touching reason Jane Goodall never traveled without her stuffed monkey
A small stuffed gray monkey named Mr. H was the constant travel companion of the late Jane Goodall. More than a toy, he served as a powerful symbol of resilience, hope, and quiet joy throughout her global travels.
Mr. H was a 1996 birthday gift from Gary Haun, a blind magician and former U.S. Marine. Haun’s own life was a testament to perseverance, a spirit that the stuffed monkey came to represent.
For decades, Mr. H accompanied Goodall to over 60 countries. He was present at award ceremonies, in classrooms, and at sanctuaries, silently reminding audiences of the strength found in overcoming adversity.
Goodall frequently shared his story in lectures and on television. She warmly explained to children that Mr. H was her mascot, using his origin to spread a message of inspiration and comfort.
To further this message, the Jane Goodall Institute created Mr. H Junior. This miniature, handcrafted version allows others to own a symbol of Goodall’s enduring themes of peace and compassion.
The world learned of Goodall’s passing on October 1, 2025. The legendary primatologist died at 91, leaving behind a legacy that forever altered our understanding of animal intelligence and empathy.
Her gentle yet powerful voice sparked global change. Today, her legacy lives on through conservation work and in the enduring symbol of the little gray monkey, a reminder that hope is always within reach.
