Leavitt Slams Pelosi Over Stock Trades as Trump, Hawley Renew Push for Congressional Ban

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has sharply criticized former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, identifying her as the “face” of the controversy over lawmakers trading stocks. Leavitt highlighted that Pelosi’s congressional salary is $174,000, yet her family’s fortune is estimated at over $400 million.

This criticism comes as President Donald Trump and Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) discussed advancing bipartisan legislation to ban stock trading by members of Congress. Leavitt confirmed the two had a “productive” call about the issue.

Leavitt pointed to Pelosi’s 2024 stock portfolio, which she said grew by 70% and outperformed major hedge funds. She argued this exemplifies a “broken system” where officials profit from public service.

A spokesperson for Pelosi defended her record, stating she has always complied with financial disclosure laws and that the criticism is a political distraction. Pelosi herself stated that her family’s trades are based on public information and are fully reported.

The push for a ban has significant public support, with polls showing 86% of Americans in favor. The proposed legislation would prohibit lawmakers and their immediate families from trading individual stocks.

The White House stated that President Trump conceptually supports the ban, framing it as part of an effort to “drain the swamp” and restore public trust in government.

While the administration is in active discussions with lawmakers, it is uncertain if the bill will pass in a divided Congress. However, the issue has gained rare bipartisan traction and is expected to remain a focal point ahead of the 2026 elections.
