Latino Gang Banger Busted In Alleged Plot to Assassinate Border Patrol Chief
In Chicago, federal authorities have charged Juan Espinoza Martinez, 37, in a murder-for-hire plot targeting Gregory Bovino, a senior Border Patrol official. The unsealed complaint led to his arrest on October 6 in Burr Ridge, Illinois.
Martinez, identified as a ranking member of the Latin Kings gang, is accused of using Snapchat to offer bounties. He allegedly offered $2,000 for information on Chief Bovino’s location and $10,000 to “take him down,” sending a photo believed to be of the target.
The investigation began after a confidential source provided law enforcement with a screenshot of these messages. Agents from multiple federal agencies then took Martinez into custody.
Senior Justice Department officials strongly condemned the alleged scheme. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche labeled it “an attack on every American who depends on law enforcement.”
U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros stated the conduct showed “profound contempt for human life.” Officials from the Department of Homeland Security also vowed to prosecute such threats to the fullest extent.
The criminal complaint details Martinez’s alleged gang role. It also claims he instructed associates to acquire firearms following a recent law enforcement incident.
Martinez has made an initial court appearance and remains in custody. The case highlights the dangers faced by federal agents, particularly those involved in operations like Chicago’s Operation Midway Blitz.
