Judi Dench, 90, gives heartbreaking health update and reason why she’s not on screen anymore

Dame Judi Dench has explained her recent absence from film and television. The celebrated actress, 90, cites her deteriorating eyesight as the primary reason.

She has been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). This eye disease affects central vision by damaging the macula, part of the retina.

Dench was first diagnosed with the condition over a decade ago, in 2012. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in people over 50 and can be hereditary.

Her eyesight has now declined to a severe degree. In a recent interview, she confessed she can no longer see well enough to recognize people’s faces.

The condition also prevents her from enjoying everyday activities. Dench has stated she is unable to watch television or read.

This significant vision loss impacts her independence. She has revealed she can no longer leave the house alone for fear of falling or walking into objects.

Consequently, her ability to work on camera has been greatly diminished. Her declining eyesight is the direct cause for her step back from acting roles.
