Relative of Karoline Leavitt savagely calls her out in first interview after being released from ICE custody

Bruna Ferreira, the mother of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s nephew, was detained by ICE in November. The Brazilian-born Massachusetts resident was held for 26 days, fearing deportation to a country she left as a child.

Ferreira was apprehended while on her way to pick up her 11-year-old son. She was taken to a detention center in Louisiana, over 1,500 miles away, before an immigration judge ordered her release on bond.

She has since publicly criticized Karoline Leavitt. In a CNN interview, Ferreira questioned Leavitt’s compassion, stating, “You’re a mother, and you should know. How would you feel if somebody did this to you?”

Ferreira claims she has not spoken to Leavitt and cannot see her son since her release. She is also required to wear a GPS ankle monitor, restricting her to her home.

The White House issued a statement, saying the child has always lived full-time with his father, Ferreira’s ex-partner Michael Leavitt. It noted Ferreira and the press secretary have not spoken in years.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson labeled Ferreira a “criminal illegal alien,” citing an alleged battery arrest and an expired tourist visa. Ferreira and her attorney deny any criminal history.

Her attorney states she was previously protected under DACA but could not renew her status. Ferreira sees herself as one of many facing family separation, asking, “When does it stop?”
