Australian police confirm disturbing motive of alleged Bondi Beach shooters as key details released

Following a deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach last weekend, Australian police have disclosed a suspected motive. The attack, which occurred during Hanukkah celebrations, resulted in fifteen fatalities and is believed to have deliberately targeted the Jewish community.

The alleged attackers have been identified as father and son Sajid and Naveed Akram. Police reported the pair used legally obtained firearms. Sajid was killed at the scene, while Naveed, who was injured, remains in police custody.

Authorities revealed that two homemade ISIS flags were found in the younger suspect’s vehicle. This evidence points to a terrorist act inspired by Islamic State ideology.

Investigators further suggested the pair were driven by this extremist ideology. It is alleged they traveled to the Philippines for military-style training, returning to Australia just one week before the attack.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated the assault appeared motivated by a “radical perversion of Islam.” He emphasized this hateful ideology, which can lead to mass murder, is a global concern.

Despite the current findings, Naveed Akram had been investigated in 2019 for connections to convicted individuals. That inquiry found no evidence of radicalization for him or his father.

During the shooting, bystander Ahmed al Ahmed attempted to disarm a suspect, sustaining bullet wounds. He has been hospitalized but is reported to be in good spirits following his heroic actions.
