People shocked by Trump’s ‘poor excuse’ as to why US needs to take over Greenland
President Donald Trump’s repeated interest in acquiring Greenland for the United States has faced renewed criticism online. Despite rejections from both Danish and Greenlandic governments, Trump maintains the move is necessary.
In a recent interview, he reaffirmed this goal following the appointment of a Special Envoy to Greenland. Trump stated the U.S. needs the territory for “national protection,” claiming Denmark provides it neither funding nor military defense.
He suggested historical U.S. claims, referencing American presence “300 years ago.” This historical assertion was quickly corrected by a community note on social media, pointing out the U.S. did not exist at that time.
Critics strongly dispute the national security argument. Many note the U.S. already operates the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, making ownership unnecessary for strategic interests.
Online reactions have been largely dismissive. One user compared Trump’s rationale to Putin’s justification for invading Ukraine, calling it a “poor excuse.”
Others mocked the proposal as uninformed, with one commenter stating listening to Trump “feels like reverse education” due to frequent inaccuracies.
The White House has been contacted for comment regarding the widespread negative response to Trump’s continued pursuit of Greenland. The proposal remains a point of international contention and public skepticism.
