Trump issues new 4-word warning to Greenland
Tensions regarding Greenland are intensifying, with notably sharp rhetoric now emerging from Washington. Despite overwhelming local opposition to becoming part of the United States, former President Donald Trump appears increasingly focused on asserting control over the Arctic territory.
Trump issued a stark warning via Truth Social, accusing Denmark of failing to address a perceived Russian threat in Greenland. He suggested the U.S. may now act unilaterally, stating, “Now it is time, and it will be done!!!”
This followed his announcement of sweeping 10% tariffs on goods from several European nations, including Denmark. Trump declared these tariffs, set for February 1, would remain “until Greenland becomes American.”
The move triggered immediate European backlash. EU leaders condemned the tariffs as coercive and a violation of trade agreements, scheduling an emergency summit. European Commission President Antonio Costa warned the EU is “ready to defend ourselves.”
In Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, approximately 1,000 protesters marched to the U.S. consulate, reaffirming their sovereignty. Greenland remains an autonomous Danish territory, with local leaders insisting its future is for its people alone to decide.
Allied nations, including Denmark and Norway, attempted to de-escalate, stressing that their military presence in Greenland poses no threat. Norwegian officials called the economic threats “unacceptable between close allies.”
Criticism also came from within the U.S. Republican Congressman Michael McCaul cautioned that any military action against Greenland would effectively mean war with NATO allies, jeopardizing the alliance itself. The situation has become a critical flashpoint for transatlantic relations.
