Actress Overcome with Emotion During Major Court Decision
In a New Mexico courtroom, Melissa Gilbert was visibly moved as a judge ruled that her husband, actor Timothy Busfield, would be released before his trial. Judge David Murphy granted the release on his own recognizance, mandating that Busfield attend all future court dates and adhere to specific conditions.
This decision came over the objections of prosecutors, who had argued for Busfield to remain in custody. Gilbert was seen wiping away tears as the ruling was announced.
Busfield’s release will be supervised by pretrial services. He must comply with several strict limitations, including abstaining from alcohol and illegal substances, avoiding firearms, and having no contact with witnesses or minors.
He is also required to inform the court of any change of address. A trial date has not yet been scheduled.
Prosecutors opposed release, citing concerns about alleged past behavior and his compliance. They referenced a prior claim from an actress and noted a delay in Busfield surrendering after an arrest warrant was issued.
However, the judge determined supervised release was suitable. This conclusion was supported by a recent psychological evaluation that assessed Busfield as a low risk, alongside submitted character references.
Letters of support from family and colleagues, including Gilbert, portrayed Busfield as compassionate and reliable. He has denied all allegations and intends to contest the charges as the case proceeds.
