Woman Who Had Controversial Surgery To Grow 13 Inches As A Teen Shows Her Life Now

At age 16, Chandler Crews of Maryland underwent a transformative limb lengthening surgery. Born with achondroplasia, the most common form of dwarfism, she stood 3’10” and faced daily physical challenges.

These challenges included difficulties washing her hair, driving, and using public restrooms. She also managed recurring health complications like bowed legs and frequent ear infections.

Seeking greater independence, Crews chose surgery at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics in 2010. She stated she wanted to change for herself, not wait for the world to accommodate her.

She underwent multiple procedures, including leg and arm lengthening, alongside corrective treatments. The total cost was nearly $2 million, largely covered by insurance as medically necessary.

The surgeries ultimately added 13 inches to her height, reaching 4’11 3/4″. This transformation granted her new practical abilities, like styling her own hair and driving more safely.

Beyond the physical change, Crews emphasizes the profound social and psychological benefits, like communicating face-to-face. She describes herself now as a “comfortable short.”

Using her experience, Crews founded The Chandler Project, a nonprofit advocating for and supporting others with achondroplasia. Her goal is to show that individuals can actively shape their lives with this condition.
