Donald Trump breaks silence as first-ever American pope is elected

Donald Trump congratulated Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, calling it a “great honor for our country” in a Truth Social post. The former president expressed excitement about the historic election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, a 69-year-old Chicago native known for his humility and advocacy for migrants. Trump added that he looks forward to meeting the new pope, calling it a “meaningful moment.”

Pope Leo XIV was elected after just one day of conclave deliberations, surprising many who expected other frontrunners. The new pontiff, who speaks Italian and Spanish, has spent much of his career abroad, including missionary work in Peru. During the conclave, cardinals followed strict protocols—no phones, newspapers, or outside contact—while staying at the Vatican’s Casa de Santa Marta. Pope Leo succeeds Francis, who passed away in April at age 88.
