The move has already drawn sharp criticism, with Iranian officials warning it would provoke nationwide outrage, as the term “Persian Gulf” has been used for centuries and holds deep historical significance.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the potential change a “politically motivated” insult to Iranians worldwide. Trump previously referred to the waterway as the “Arabian Gulf” during his first term, prompting mockery from Iranian leaders who suggested he “study geography.” While some Arab nations use the alternate name, the reported policy shift risks further inflaming tensions with Iran amid already strained relations over nuclear talks and regional conflicts.
