Olympic athlete was immediately disqualified from Games after ‘scandalous behaviour’ against opponent
Georgian judoka Guram Tushishvili faced immediate disqualification at the Paris Olympics for unsportsmanlike conduct during his quarter-final match against France’s Teddy Riner in the +100kg category. After losing to Riner, Tushishvili reacted angrily, pushing his leg into Riner’s crotch and making a hostile gesture in his face. The crowd booed him, and commentators condemned his actions as “scandalous” and “disrespectful.” Judo’s strict rules led to his disqualification, costing him a chance at a bronze medal and banning him from the team event.
The International Judo Federation suspended Tushishvili for 180 days, lasting until February 2025, citing a violation of the “spirit of judo.” Meanwhile, Riner won gold in both the +100kg and mixed team events, securing his seventh Olympic medal. Tushishvili returned to competition at the European Judo Championships in April.
