Politician Blames Guns After Shocking Campus Assassination
Following a tragic campus shooting in Utah, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez demanded urgent legislative action on gun control. She criticized what she termed years of congressional inaction on the issue.
Speaking to reporters outside the Capitol, she stated, “Beyond rhetoric, we need action.” She emphasized that people die daily from gun violence while some in Congress consistently vote against measures to address it.
The incident occurred during a speaking event at Utah Valley University. Shots were fired from a building approximately 200 yards away, striking the guest speaker.
Security personnel immediately evacuated the victim and placed the campus on lockdown. Police briefly detained multiple suspects but released them after determining they were not involved. The shooter remains at large.
Witness video captured the moments before the attack, showing the speaker answering questions. A loud pop is heard, followed by visible distress as security rushed to the stage.
Leaders from across the political spectrum universally condemned the attack. Some lawmakers called for prayers, while others highlighted the urgent need to address rising political violence.
Utah officials confirmed that campus police and federal authorities are continuing the investigation. Security has been increased for similar events in the coming weeks.
