High school coach who was fired for praying with players wins $1.7 million settlement

High school coach Joseph Kennedy, who was dismissed for praying with players, has secured a $1.7 million settlement from the Bremerton School District in Washington State. The district accepted the award unanimously. Kennedy will also serve as an assistant football coach in 2023, receiving a stipend for his time.

School board president Alyson Rotter expressed the community’s desire to move past the nearly eight-year legal battle. Kennedy, fired for praying with students, found relief in two developments: the settlement and a Supreme Court ruling in his favor.

“The school community is eager to put this nearly eight-year legal battle behind them,” said Rotter. Kennedy feels justified after the Court upheld his right to pray with students, ruling 6-3 in his favor
