Heavily-Tattooed Woman Says It’s “Not Fair” That She Can’t Get A Job
A recent job rejection at TJ Maxx has sparked controversy after a woman accused the retailer of discrimination based on her appearance. Ash Putnam, known as @ashxobrien on TikTok, shared her experience of being denied a part-time job due to her tattoos and piercings.
Putnam applied for the job and received a rejection email weeks later. She found the impersonal rejection email insensitive given her efforts in applying. When she visited her local TJ Maxx to inquire, an employee cited her lack of experience. However, Putnam suspected her tattoos influenced the decision.
Despite her disappointment, Putnam emphasized she didn’t necessarily need the job but sought additional income to pay off debt faster. Her visible tattoos, including imagery with Satanic connotations, drew thousands of comments on TikTok suggesting they likely influenced TJ Maxx’s decision.
@ashxobrien I want to know who is also having a hard time finding a job right now! #jobs #jobmarket
This incident raised broader questions about societal attitudes towards body modifications and hiring practices. Putnam questioned, “Why should tattoos be a barrier to employment?” highlighting the ongoing debate on appearance-based discrimination in the workplace. The case emphasizes the need for more inclusive and equitable hiring practices.
