I complained that my husband has been sitting on the toilet too long every day, then on my thirty-fifth birthday, I discovered the reason why.

My husband and I had been married for ten years when his behavior changed. He started spending hours locked in our only bathroom, which was inconvenient with three kids.

Our daughter Ruby complained she couldn’t use the toilet because daddy wouldn’t get out. When I asked Gerald about it, he insisted he was fine, but I worried he might be hiding something. My friend Terry suggested tummy troubles, but I feared an affair.

Determined to look my best, I planned a makeover and a birthday party. On the big day, Gerald seemed distant. During the party, he gave me a gift—a book of poems he’d written for me while locked in the bathroom.

Realizing he was writing poetry, not having an affair, I was relieved. We converted the pantry into a study for him, ensuring he no longer needed to write in the toilet.

Lessons:

  1. Don’t jump to conclusions.
  2. Communicate with your partner.
  3. Support their creativity.
  4. Trust is essential.
