With heavy hearts, we announce the passing
Melanie Safka, the singer behind 1970s hits “Brand New Key” and “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” passed away on January 23, 2024, at 76. Her children, Leilah, Jeordie, and Beau Jarred, announced her death, sharing that she “peacefully crossed over from this world to the next” after being “ill.”
Melanie rose to fame after performing at Woodstock in 1969 and became known for hits like “Lay Down” and “Brand New Key.” She also founded Neighborhood Records, the first independent rock label owned by a woman.
Her children remembered her as “one of the smartest, bravest, and most passionate women of her time.” Fans were invited to light a candle in her memory on January 24th at 10 p.m. Central time.
Melanie was working on a new album, Second Hand Smoke, before her passing. A Celebration of Life is planned, with details to be shared later.
