Restaurant Owner Discovers Cleaner Secretly Collects Leftovers From Tables & Follows Her After Work to Find out Why She Needs It — Story of the Day
A restaurant owner, George Carson, discovers a cleaner, Consuelo Ruiz, secretly collecting leftover food from plates at his prestigious New York restaurant, The Kettle of Fish. One night, George sees her scraping scraps into a plastic bag and follows her after work. He is shocked to find she lives in a condemned building, using the scraps to feed her hungry children.
George learns that his manager, Colt Farrow, knew of Ruiz’s struggles but did nothing to help. Confronting Farrow, George uncovers that the manager has been underpaying Ruiz and exploiting her situation. Furious, George fires Farrow and vows to improve conditions for his staff.
When George talks to Ruiz, she pleads, “Please, sir, don’t fire me. I just have no one, and I need the food.” Instead, George offers her a proper salary, a work contract, and a safe place to live. He even arranges an apartment with running water and promises no more scraps, only real meals. George is inspired by his grandfather’s journey as an immigrant and wants to give others the same chance to build a better life.
