Donald Trump suggests U-turn on decision to run for third term as president in speech to US troops

Donald Trump has once again stirred controversy by hinting at a potential third presidential term, despite constitutional limits. During a speech to US troops in Qatar, he referred to his current term as his “third” and teased, “Some people want us to do a fourth… I’ll have to think about that.” This contradicts his earlier dismissal of the idea after his campaign sold ‘Trump 2028’ merchandise. The Twenty-Second Amendment explicitly bars presidents from serving more than two terms, a rule established after Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four-term presidency.

While Trump’s remarks may be speculative, they raise questions about how he could bypass constitutional restrictions. Some suggest tactics like temporarily swapping roles with Vice President JD Vance or pushing for a constitutional amendment. However, such moves would face significant legal and political hurdles. Trump’s comments, alongside his repeated unproven claims of election fraud, continue to fuel debate about his long-term ambitions and the stability of US democratic norms.
