Trump responds after multiple people shot including National Guard members as White House goes into lockdown
A shooting near the White House in Washington DC has resulted in two National Guardsmen being critically wounded. The incident occurred at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET at the entrance to the Farragut West Metro station.
Initial reports about the Guardsmen’s condition were conflicting. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey retracted an earlier statement that they had died, clarifying that the situation was unclear. A third victim was also reported, but their identity remains unknown.
The suspect was injured during the event and taken into custody by the Washington DC Metropolitan Police. All individuals involved have been transported to hospitals for treatment.
At the time of the shooting, President Donald Trump was not in the White House but at his Palm Beach resort. Vice President JD Vance was also away, reported to be in Kentucky.
President Trump responded to the incident on Truth Social, referring to the shooter as an “animal” and vowing that they would “pay a very steep price.” He expressed his support for the National Guard and law enforcement.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the administration is aware of the “tragic situation” and that the President has been briefed. Following the shooting, the White House complex was placed on lockdown as a precaution.
The FBI is engaged and assisting with the investigation. This event occurs against a backdrop of increased National Guard presence in the capital, following an earlier order from President Trump that federalized the local police force.
