A Man Finds a Wallet with $700
A man finds a wallet containing $700. Later, he reads a notice offering a $50 reward for returning a wealthy man’s lost wallet. When the man returns the wallet, the wealthy man counts the money and accuses him, saying, “I see you have already taken your reward.”
The man responds, “What are you talking about?” The wealthy man insists, “This wallet had $750 in it when I lost it.” They argue and eventually take the matter to court.
In court, both men present their cases. The wealthy man concludes with, “Your Honor, I trust you believe me.” The Judge replies, “Of course.” The wealthy man smiles, but the poor man is devastated.
The Judge then takes the wallet and gives it to the man who found it. The wealthy man angrily asks, “What are you doing?” The Judge explains, “If this wallet had $750, and the man who found it is a liar and a thief, he wouldn’t have returned it. This wallet must belong to someone else. If the owner steps forward, they get the money. Otherwise, it stays with the man who found it.”
The wealthy man asks, “What about my money?” The Judge replies, “We’ll wait until someone finds your wallet with $750 in it.”
