John Amos, “Good Times” dad and “Roots” star, dead at 84
John Amos, the beloved TV actor known for Good Times, Roots, and The West Wing, has died at 84. His family confirmed that he passed away of natural causes at his Los Angeles home on August 21.
Amos, born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, first pursued football before finding success in acting. He gained recognition as Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and became iconic for his role as James Evans in Good Times. He also earned an Emmy nomination for his powerful portrayal of Kunta Kinte in Roots.
Amos appeared in many notable films and TV shows, including Die Hard 2 and Coming to America. His son, Kelly Christopher Amos, called him “a man with a heart of gold” and a “TV father” to many. John Amos leaves behind a lasting legacy in television and film.
