Baltimore Bridge Collapse: Mass Casualty Event Confirmed
In Baltimore, the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River after being struck by a cargo ship, marking a ‘mass casualty event’. Emergency services estimate up to 20 people may be in the water, prompting a significant rescue operation. Kevin Cartwright from the Baltimore Fire Department stated, “Our focus right now is trying to rescue and recover these people.”
The 47-year-old bridge is closed to traffic, with Mayor Brandon M. Scott en route to assess the situation. The vessel involved, named Dali, flagged in Singapore, was headed for Colombo Port, Sri Lanka. All crew members are safe, but the cause of the incident remains unclear.
Video footage circulating online captures the moment of impact, with a substantial portion of the bridge collapsing into the river. Eyewitnesses observed several cars on the bridge during the collision.
